Armenia Holds Crucial Parliamentary Election Amid Political Tensions
According to reports, more than 2.4 million citizens are eligible to vote, with 18 political groupings—comprising 16 parties and two alliances—competing for seats in parliament.
Electoral rules require parties to secure at least 4% of the vote to enter parliament, while alliances face higher thresholds depending on their size. The election does not require a minimum turnout to be considered valid, and voting is taking place only within Armenia, as overseas voting is not permitted for parliamentary contests.
The vote is seen as a key test for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, whose government has pursued closer alignment with the European Union and the United States while relations with Russia have deteriorated in recent years.
According to reports, the election follows a politically charged period, including the detention of six parliamentary candidates from the opposition Strong Armenia bloc shortly before voting began. The bloc is led by businessman Samvel Karapetyan and is considered one of the main challengers to the ruling party.
Tensions have also risen after recent public debates in which Pashinyan, who came to power following the 2018 “Velvet Revolution,” called for the exclusion of several opposition forces from the race. However, the Central Election Commission declined to remove Strong Armenia from the ballot.
Opposition figures have accused the authorities of exerting pressure ahead of the vote, while Russian officials and political figures have criticized the pre-election environment, raising concerns about democratic standards.
Despite these disputes, Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party is still projected to remain the largest force in parliament, although it may fall short of an outright majority, according to polling trends. The fragmented opposition continues to compete for influence across multiple parties and alliances.
